The study, published in the journal PLoS Medicine, analyzed data from 1,904 men in Kenya and South Africa who were circumcised at birth and followed for six years. It found that those who were circumcised had significantly lower rates of HIV, herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2., chlamydia, syphilis, and bacterial vaginosis (BV). Circumcision is one of the most common surgical procedures performed on children worldwide. About half of all newborn males in the U.S. and Western Europe are circumcised. In Africa, about 80% of newborn males are circumcised. In the U.S., circumcision rates have been dropping since the 1980s, partly because some doctors now recommend it only to treat urinary tract infections.
